Coffee with Strangers

Coffee with Strangers is Elsa Weill's community for expats and newcomers who want a real conversation over a coffee. We built the website that turned those in-person meetings into something people could join online, from the sign-up flow and member profiles to the automated email that puts two members in touch. Elsa approves every new member herself, so the build had to keep that human step intact.

  1. 01How they came inElsa had a community that already worked in person and no home for it online. The first call was about giving coffee meetings between strangers a place people could find and join.
  2. 02Picking a directionWe chose the poetic Random Musings route, then mapped the homepage around a banner, a clear call to action and an about section built on Elsa's own story.
  3. 03The sign-up that does the matchingSign-up collects what someone likes and turns it into a profile with a short bio and a photo. Elsa approves each member before they appear, and an automated email connects them.
  4. 04The second passWe changed the look on review. The flower theme went, replaced by dark blue and yellow with a cosmos and starry-night feel, four pages, a Polaroid-style coffee gallery and a Share the Love section on the homepage.

Questions

Asked about this work

What is the site for?

To let a stranger book a coffee with one of the hosts, in person or online.

Why the hand-made look?

The whole idea is informal. A slick corporate site would have contradicted the thing it was selling.

Is it multilingual?

Yes. Hosts write in English, French and German and the site carries a language switch.
