LifestyleHouse of Aroma
House of Aroma makes scented candles and aromatic oils in natural wax, sold in jars and tins with illustrated botanical labels. Scents run from Tropical Fruits to Ginger, Cinnamon and Nutmeg. The brief was product photography that carries the scent without a word of copy.
- 01How they came inA candle brand with a real problem. You cannot photograph a smell, and a lit jar on a plain table tells a buyer nothing about what is inside it.
- 02What we took onA product shoot built around the scent notes rather than the packaging. Each candle styled with what it is made of.
- 03How it runsGinger, Cinnamon and Nutmeg sits on raw wood with cinnamon sticks and dried root. Tropical Fruits sits under gypsophila with dried petals around the base. The prop set changes with the label, the light does not.
- 04Where it standsThe catalogue is shot as a set, so the range can be posted or listed in any order and still look like one brand.
Photography
Candles shot lit, in low warm light, styled with their own scent notes. Cinnamon bark and dried root for the spice range, gypsophila and petals for the fruit range, so a buyer reads the scent before the label.
Asked about this work
Are the candles photographed lit?
Yes. A lit wick gives the shot its light source and shows the wax pool, which is what tells a buyer it is a real burn and not a mockup.
How do you show a scent in a photograph?
By styling the frame with the ingredients on the label. Cinnamon bark and dried ginger for the spice candles, dried petals and gypsophila for the fruit ones.
Is the whole range shot in one style?
Yes. The props change per scent, the lighting and treatment stay fixed, so the range holds together as a catalogue.
